Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a type of electronic circuitry designed to perform memory manipulation operations specifically intended to accelerate the extremely parallel outputs required to drive a display. While the early GPU was only designed to render and output to a display, modern GPUs allow rendered data to be sent back to the main processor. This parallel nature allows modern GPUs to accelerate tasks like video encoding as well as decoding.
