Gigabit Ethernet is another name for 1000BASE-T, a standard for copper cables Cat5(e) and beyond (depending on the distance of the run). Although it’s technically capable of delivering 1000 Mb/s (megabits/second) or one billion bits per second, the overhead of the packet-based protocols typically limits connections to around 940 Mb/s.
