Dedicated / Discrete Graphics Processing Unit (dGPU) is a graphical subsystem dedicated to handling graphical operations delegated by the main processor. dGPU is a term is typically used to differentiate this sort of system from that of an Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (iGPU) when the term GPU is unable to provide sufficient clarity of description and especially for systems that offer both integrated and discrete graphics in the same hardware package. dGPUs typically include their own memory bank to offer greater memory bandwidth and improve performance over integrated solutions. Systems with dGPUs require larger power supplies, additional cooling, and increases in the size and complexity of the system.
