AM4 or Socket AM4 describes the PGA (or Pin Grid Array) socket used for the original Ryzen 1000 to 5000 series desktop processors and motherboards spanning 2016 to 2022 (a notably long span of time). The various motherboard tiers include b320, b350, b450, b550, and x570, from most affordable to most feature-packed. While AMD stuck with AM4 with the promise of reducing eWaste, this also means it can be difficult to determine what final features an older motherboard will provide once the correct BIOS / UEFI firmware has been updated. For instance, while PCIe 4.0 compatibility may not be mentioned in the original specs of older AM4 boards, many may receive this feature after the firmware is updated and a new processor is installed.
