64-bit can refer to the width of a memory address, a word or integer, or the capabilities of a modern processor to address memory at that width. A 64-bit Central Processing Unit (CPU) allows a system to address greater than 4 GB of memory and as computational requirements have increased over time, this increased level of precision and access has become essential to modern expectations surrounding computers in developed countries. It is also especially vital to graphical, creative, or scientific, and other types of operations that can now easily exceed the 4 GB barrier.
