On-Board Diagnostics version 2 (OBD2) is a standardized protocol and data port required by federal regulation on all vehicles manufactured in the US after 1996. It can provide dynamic data streams for variables such as speed, throttle position, engine RPMs, fuel consumption and economy, battery voltage, air and coolant temperature,… in real-time while the vehicle is running. It also provides standardized trouble codes for various vehicle subsystems when the check engine light is illuminated, as well as proprietary warnings for non-standard systems specific to various vehicle manufacturers.
