The NPU or Neural Processing Unit is a specialized type of processor element optimized for the types of tasks associated with Ai, like machine learning and inference. Before the NPU, the graphics processor handled these types of operations, but was traditionally limited by VRAM (usually 8 or 12 GB). The NPU shares main memory, meaning that you can upgrade your NPU’s Ai capacity with a simple memory upgrade. NPUs should be integrated into mainstream desktop and portable chips by 2025.
