I built a new Intel NUC for Welch | Hall Architects. After proposing several candidates, we selected the NUC7i7DNHE powered by the i7-8650U hyperthreaded quad-core CPU.
This is the second NUC I’ve built and should do nicely for serving CAD data through ArchiCAD’s BIMcloud software. It will feature 3 TB of SSD storage and 32 GB of RAM.
This is the second Intel NUC I have built: read about the first. This NUC is much louder than the Pentium Silver version. The fan ramps up and spins down abruptly rather than gradually, often after only a second or two. Intel should probably tweak this behavior a bit. There’s some intense fan whine here, but if you put it under a desk or in a closet, you won’t hear it.
Update: This NUC has been a support nightmare and it will probably be the last time I recommend a NUC for any client. You can read about the support experience here.
